COVID-19 Stories of Hope (Volume Five)

UESRNC volunteers blog header

Once a week, we will share quick updates from our affiliates who are still supporting various communities in need across New York City. Hear from our affiliates as they mention how COVID-19 has impacted their programs and services, and how they're still remaining hopeful about God continuing to work in our city.

Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (UESRNC)

Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (UESRNC) is encouraging adults and children to send cards, letters, and drawings to their elderly residents, who are currently isolated and engaging less with friends, family, and extra activities. Rebecca Parry, a Redeemer East Side congregant, shared:

"This morning, we mailed our package of artwork and cards to the UES Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. We are heading into week 5 of quarantine, and I have been trying to keep our children involved in praying for our city through this difficult time. When my pastor shared HFNY’s volunteer opportunity to send cards to the UESRNC, I knew it was a project that would be perfect for little hands and also allow us to pray specifically for the recipients of our artwork. Thank you for keeping us connected to our neighbors and helping us share God’s love in a tangible way!"

Isaiah 58

Isaiah 58, a ministry for people living with HIV/AIDS at Bailey-Holt House is also encouraging volunteers to send inspiring mail to their residents. HFNY’s Communications Manager, Sherry Huang, recently participated by creating letter-drawings to send some snail mail sunshine to four current residents.

Graffiti

Graffiti, like many other church ministries with food and meal programs, had to modify how they distributed food items within safety protocols. They’re still continuing their Wednesday afternoon grocery program, Wednesday night meals, and Saturday lunches—but all in a to-go format. Chris Mumau, their Volunteer Team Leader, has also been dedicated to “serving God’s people with God’s love.” Hear more from Kareem Goubran, Worship Leader/Adult Director, about how the Hope for New York Relief Fund has helped Graffiti.

Youth for Christ

Youth for Christ has been aiming to maintain communication with the incarcerated youth who they mentor and support. While various juvenile centers have stopped accepting visitors to keep youth safe, one way Youth for Christ is staying connected is through a prayer box. This special box allows youth at Crossroads Juvenile Center to write and submit prayer requests. Hear from Dan Sanabria, Executive Director, share more:
