City Relief: Where Compassion Meets Action
For over three decades, Hope For New York has been connecting kind and compassionate New Yorkers with nonprofits and churches to bring tangible hope to communities that need it most. Among our 80+ nonprofit partners is City Relief, an organization that brings help to the streets through mobile food pantries and critical resources for unhoused and food-insecure neighbors.
A Partnership Built on 20 Years of Trust
Our partnership with City Relief goes deep. Week after week, their customized fleet of buses, complete with kitchens and resource offices, visits neighborhoods across New York City and New Jersey. Volunteers serve homemade soup and bread alongside necessities, meeting people where they are with dignity and warmth. Each year, our funding helps City Relief serve over 30,000 guests, providing not just immediate relief but personalized support to help rebuild lives affected by homelessness, poverty, addiction, and unemployment.
How We Support City Relief's Mission
Volunteer Mobilization: The Heart of the Work
Volunteers are critical to City Relief's outreach. At each site, they distribute nutritious meals, fresh socks, and hygiene kits while managing crowds, praying with guests, and ensuring smooth operations from setup to teardown. But the support doesn't stop when the buses leave. Senior Volunteers conduct Life Care Visits, 1:1 follow-up conversations where they work with guests to tackle specific challenges and create personalized action plans for the future.
Capacity Building: Investing in Infrastructure
Sometimes the most impactful help happens behind the scenes. Our Capacity Building Grant enabled City Relief staff to obtain commercial driving licenses, a seemingly simple need that unlocked their ability to bring hope directly to those who need it. After 20 hours of training and a rigorous three-hour road test, newly licensed drivers now ensure the mobile outreach can reach every corner of the city.
Collaboration: Multiplying Impact Through Partnership
When needs surge, collaboration is essential. Our 2024 Collaboration Grant connected City Relief with The Salvation Army to address the growing crisis facing migrants and homeless guests. Together, they've expanded access to clothing vouchers, metro cards, ride-sharing, and food assistance, proving that partnerships can meet challenges no single organization could tackle alone.
Annual Program Funding: Sustaining the Mission
Our core funding powers City Relief's Mobile Outreach and Guest Services program, keeping that fleet of food trucks on the road and hot, nutritious meals flowing to those facing homelessness. But meals are just the beginning. Funding also supports those crucial Life Care Visits, where trained personnel connect guests with housing assistance, public transportation cards, SNAP benefits, healthcare enrollment, detox and rehab programs, and other services that create pathways out of crisis.
This is hope in action. This is New York at its best.
