Don't Walk By is an annual winter outreach to people experiencing homelessness in New York City. Volunteer teams canvass the streets and subway lines of Manhattan looking to meet and our neighbors in need. Outreach teams meet new friends on the street and seek to minister to them where they are at by providing spiritual care and basic needs.

Communities in Need
Hundreds of HFNY church partner volunteers sign up to serve over the 4 Saturdays of Don't Walk By, and gain practical knowledge of the struggles that people experiencing homeless face as well as how to engage with people in need on a daily basis.
Making Grants To Fund Programs
Our grant dollars support all the program costs for Don't Walk By, from hearty dinners for the guests to medical supplies and hygiene kits.
Why We Love This Affiliate
Families and children from HFNY's partner churches will assemble over 1,000 care kits filled with hygiene products that will be distributed to the homeless through Don't Walk By.
Committing to walk & engage with the homeless made me think about the future: how would stopping this time, instead of walking by, change the way I commute everyday? Could I go back to putting on blinders to the need in my own neighborhood?
Elizabeth E., Volunteer
Now in its fourteenth year, Don't Walk By continues to serve our most marginalized neighbors living on the streets. This year, with rising concerns around the Omicron variant, more changes were made to Don't Walk By.
For National Volunteer Week (April 17 to April 23), we're spotlighting four volunteers who connected with affiliates through our church partners. Hear what it means for them to serve different communities.
HFNY focuses on mercy, justice, generosity, poverty and brokenness. I find those five words challenging. In the context of each of our lives they mean so many different things, but one thing does connect them all—and it’s that they impact each of us every day.
