Teach ESL to Adults in Queens

About this Opportunity

Teach English to adult immigrants so they can function more fully in the United States. 


Qualifications:

1) Ability to speak, read and write English as a native speaker. 


2)Commitment to teach 1.5 hrs./week for a period of at least one semester (Sept-Dec, Jan-May, June-July).


Note: Special ESL certification is not a requirement for this volunteer job opportunity. We will train you on the job, but ask that you have a teachable, flexible and humble posture during your time of service at the SACC.


Dress Code: Men & Women - no shorts please. Ladies - pants, capris or knee-length or longer dresses are fine. No tank tops, spaghetti straps, tight-fitting clothes or leggings with oversized t-shirts. Casual clothes are okay.


Expectations: Arrive to class at least 10 minutes early, take attendance and welcome students, assist lead teacher by supporting students in the classroom with small group activities or completing in-class assignments, use methods and curriculum recommended by the SACC staff, wear a name tag when possible to demonstrate professional status and to easily allow students and other volunteers to know who you are, attend occasional teacher’s meetings, clean and straighten your classroom after each class and adhere to the SACC policy and dress code.

  3. Literacy ESL Class - Tuesdays (8:45-9:45AM) (Requesting 2 volunteers)
  4. Level 1 Beginner's ESL Class - Tuesdays (10-11:30am) (Requesting 2 volunteers)
  5. Level 2 Grammar & Conversation ESL Class - Wednesdays (6:00-7:00pm) (Requesting: 2 volunteers)
