Habitat for Humanity New York City and Westchester County is seeking a Community Engagement Intern to support the Volunteer and Community Engagement team in engaging diverse communities in service of Habitat’s mission. The position plays a support role in expanding relationships to build awareness of Habitat’s programs, projects and resources, facilitate advocacy participation, and engage community leaders and networks in Habitat’s mission and impact. A key focus will be to expand and re-engage partnerships in neighborhoods and communities Habitat serves.
While this internship is unpaid, it is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain greater experience in community engagement, affordable housing development, and public policy. The ideal candidate for this unpaid internship position has a strong work ethic, a can-do attitude, excellent communication skills, is organized and detail-oriented, and excited about the prospect of engaging communities and individuals across the region.
Potential Responsibilities:
- Researching and updating community and faith-based contacts
- Supporting the coordination of Community Advisory groups and Participatory Design events in neighborhoods with Habitat build projects
- Program outreach support and representing the organization at community events
- Support the establishment of a Habitat Community Ambassadors volunteer program
- Support advocacy activities and campaigns – including implementation and organization of the “paper house” postcard campaign
- Support the involvement of the CEO, CSO and other members of the leadership team in relationship building, communications to, and stewardship of community partners
Skills:

- Basic Microsoft Suite skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong networking and relationship management skills
- Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
- Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
