The Meaning of His Toy Store

November 11, 2015

BY WHITNEY EDGE, MANAGER OF VOLUNTEER INITIATIVES

It's our favorite time of year! At Hope for New York, we get so excited about celebrating families in our city through the annual His Toy Store outreach. This year, we've got 9 store locations where over 800 families in need will be invited to shop for brand new toys at no cost.

But it doesn't stop there. We want His Toy Store to be more than a one-time toy giveaway.

Our hope is to do 4 important things through His Toy Store:

  • Empower parents of families in need to Christmas shop for their children at no cost, and to give back to the affiliate nonprofit and/or church hosting the store by donating $1 per toy they receive.
  • Offer HFNY affiliates an opportunity to expand their outreach into the communities they serve, increasing their ability to connect with and resource families year-round.
  • Offer HFNY church partners an opportunity to connect with their neighbors in need, making available to families a year-round spiritual family.
  • Enable volunteers to come alongside our affiliates to meet, interact, and serve families at Christmas.

That's why we make every effort to provide not just toys, but a relational experience at the store. The volunteers, affiliate staff, and church partner staff come together during the shopping to build meaningful connections with parents and kids to support their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs for the long haul.

We see it as part of bringing the Kingdom now, and a glimpse of the "not yet" that we look forward to when God's full reconciliation has come.

That's why we are buzzing with excitement here at HFNY in anticipation for the stores that we'll host across the city on December 5th and 12th! Please pray with us for these outreaches and for the love of Christ to be known by all who are involved.

Want to get involved this year? Help us stock our stores with toys! Give to provide toys for families in need through Nov. 30 at hfny.org/HTS
