Housing & Inequality in NYC: A HFNY Network Talk

Monday, April 1 at 7PM
W83 Ministry Center | 150 W. 83rd St, NY, NY

More than 60,000 New Yorkers experience homelessness each night. More than half of New Yorkers are rent burdened (pay over 30% of their income on rent). And, in the past 20 years, our city has lost over 330,000 units of affordable housing.

In the face of increasing rents and decreasing access to affordable housing, who are our most vulnerable neighbors when it comes to housing accessibility? What are the challenges to finding and staying in a home in the city? What are the opportunities for Gospel practice in the places we occupy, and its implications for our neighbors? And what is our role as Christians to be participants in pursuing justice and equity for access to housing?

In this workshop, we will learn about the landscape of housing in our city today, and hear from practitioners working with vulnerable New Yorkers to find and remain in their homes. Our hope is that you’ll come away with a greater awareness of the complexities of housing and inequality in our city, greater empathy for those most affected by this issue, and a better understanding of how to live with a distinct Biblical understanding and practice of sharing and advocating with those with whom we share life in our neighborhoods.
